Favorite Quote: Never trust a writer who doesn’t have too many books to read. Or a reader, for that matter.
Story Synopsis: Viv is back, but instead of her retirement story from Legends & Lattes, we have Viv’s amazing origin story.
Waylaid in the town of Murk after an injury by a necromancer, Viv finds a lovely, albeit slow, bookshop run by Fern. When a suspicious man shows up at the bookshop, Viv goes on high alert, trying to protect the town and her new friends. Despite her injury, Viv pokes around trying to find this man’s origin, while also helping Fern spruce up her store and attract new business. When the suspicious man turns up dead, Viv and Fern acquire a magical helper tied to the necromancer and inadvertently bring the necromancer to Murk.
Why does this book beguile? Another sweet & wholesome book! In Bookshops and Bonedust, Viv’s origin is explored, especially how she acquired Blackblood, her sword. Fern is a new and delightful character with a foul mouth and a big heart. Baldree does an excellent job of character development and building a lovely, delightful story of high adventure and low stakes.
