Synopsis: Jennette McCurdy rose in popularity thanks to her work on Nickelodeon shows, iCarly, and Sam & Cat. Despite her success, McCurdy describes the hell she was living in, her deeply complex relationship with her mother, and how her mother’s death allowed her to reclaim her identity and make changes for the better.

Why does this book beguile? I never saw the shows McCurdy did and didn’t know the actor, but I wanted to read this because this memoir received a lot - like a lot - of hype. The hype is worthwhile. Not only is this book powerfully written, but McCurdy also does an exquisite job of stating her feelings and experiences in a factual, sometimes sarcastic way. Her sense of humor shines through some of her darker moments as she paints a picture of a young child desperate to please her overbearing stage mom and how it played into a toxic codependent relationship. I promise, none of that is a spoiler - just look at the title of the book!
