Favorite Quote: Your records show exceptional intelligence and mediocre results. It’s a comfortable place, mediocrity. Never pushing oneself to the limits to see what you can take. Never staring down your fears, never reaching into yourself to find that last bit of courage.
Story Synopsis: Billie Webster gets recruited by the extra-governmental agency The Museum as a young woman. With three others, they form the Sphinxes, an all-female assassin group, able to use the patriachry and misogyny of the 70s and 80s against their targets. After forty years of work, the four friends/colleagues have retired and gather for a cruise to celebrate. On the cruise, they learn they are the marks — their former employer has put out a hit on all four women. Naturally, the Killers of a Certain Age take matters into their own hands.
Why does this book beguile? I got this book as part of a mystery bundle at my local bookstore and I didn’t expect to love it. IT IS SO CUTE. The protagonists - all 60 year-old women - kick ass, take names, and complain about their aches, pains, regrets, and triumphs. They snip at each other, have each other’s backs, and plot and scheme to take control of their lives from the old school regime who seeks to terminate them.
I love these ladies and look forward to reading more by the author!
