Story Synopsis: I requested this because I loved the Nightshade trilogy and assumed I knew what I was getting. I did not. Reliquary is horror, set on an island off the coast of Maine where a sea god lives, and one obscenely wealthy family holds the only knowledge of how to handle it. The ritual at the center of this book is deeply unsettling. The psychology underneath it, about how childhood trauma twists adult relationships, makes it worse in the best possible way.
Why does this book beguile? Holy hell, I loved this! Weird, creepy, fast-paced, and the kind of book that gets under your skin and stays there. Whitten earns every uncomfortable moment and never tips into gore for the sake of it. I had no idea this was horror going in and I am so glad I didn't. It’s hard to write about without spoilers, but go read it. Even if you think you don’t like horror… read it.
