Story Synopsis: Sybil Van Antwerp, 73 and retired from a career in law, has spent her life writing letters. Every morning she sits down and corresponds, to her brother, her closest friend, authors she admires, a teenage boy she's taken under her wing, and one person she never sends anything to at all. The novel unfolds entirely through what she writes and receives, no narration, no summary, just her words on the page and everything they don't quite say.
Why does this book beguile? Sybil sits down at her deskthree days a week and for the first fifty pages, I wanted to write her a letter back telling her to lighten up. She's the kind of woman who corrects your grammar in a thank-you note (and means it kindly, which somehow makes it worse). Pedantic. Sanctimonious. I have enough of that in my life (it’s me, I am pedantic), so I nearly gave up.
I didn't give up. Mostly out of spite, if I'm honest.
Sybil isn't just fussy about stationery. She's lonely and letters are how she reaches for people without having to actually be reached back. Everyone else in her life moved on to emails and group chats years ago. She's still sealing envelopes and waiting weeks for a reply. I quickly realized Sybil’s stubbornness wasn't a personality quirk; it was a woman keeping the whole world at the distance she could manage. The pedantry stopped being annoying and started being armor. The sanctimony stopped being smug and started being a woman who'd decided being right was a lot safer than being known. I went from wanting to send her a strongly worded letter of my own to being completely, stubbornly in her corner, and I did not see that coming.
If you're someone who bails the second a narrator gets on your nerves, don't do that here. Give her more rope than your instincts want to. I almost didn't, and I would have missed one of the best character arcs I've read all year.
