Story Synopsis: Rin is a war orphan who was raised in a rural area of Nikara. After her foster parents decide to marry her off to an opium merchant in exchange for a steady stream of opium, Rin works so hard to study for the nationwide test to determine one’s advanced education. When she arrives at her new Academy, she’s faced with prejudice, classism, and impending war. Rin grows up quickly and shows an aptitude for strategy, logic, and combat and learns about her country’s history and herself.

Likes: The Poppy War is beautifully written. I really enjoyed this book and getting to know Rin and seeing her story. I could definitely see the story play out as if it were a TV series in my mind. This is the first of three books and I enjoyed how it ended in a way to make you want to read the next book, but not with such a cliffhanger that you felt like you couldn’t pause.

Comments: The Poppy War is a long book. Kuang writes with such realism that it overwhelmed me at times due to her vivid descriptions. This is a military fantasy book and as such, many violent aspects of wars and battles are described in great detail. I really enjoy strategy and The Poppy War does a great job reminding us that all strategic, macro decisions have important micro consequences.
