Story Synopsis: Merowdis Scot only finds peace in the woods, particularly in Midwinter. Her sister invents ways to get Merowdis out of the house and into the woods (so as not to be improper for a young unmarried woman). Merowdis can speak with the animals and trees, and one day, on her walk, she encounters the truth about her desires and the beings that can make them come true.
Why does this book beguile? Susanna Clarke is a beguiling author and I look forward to reading her chunky novel, Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell.
The Wood at Midwinter is a short story - barely sixty pages in length - which leaves the reader wanting more. I absolutely wanted to know what happens to Merowdis next! It’s so hard to describe this book without spoiling it since it’s so short, but you can absolutely read this in under one hour!
