Favorite Quote: How many others had foolishly underestimated the Prince of Sloth? Had mistaken his penchant for reading all day for laziness instead of what it truly was— honing the best weapon in his arsenal: his mind.
Story Synopsis: Envy, a demon prince, is trying to keep his court from collapsing. When the Unseelie King begins an elaborate game, he must play to win the one item that will re-establish his court. To play, he gets mixed up with a human artist, Camilla, whose paintings are so real, they seem to come to life. Camilla tests his patience and his boundaries and Envy is faced with saving his court or his heart.
Why does this book beguile? I got this book from a mystery bag at a Blackbird Books & Coffee event. I decided to read this one because my shelf told me to. I ran "match me from my shelf" and this came back as a strong fit, and the matchmaking was sound. Bridgerton-adjacent romance, a demon with an actual character arc, biblical mythology woven through the whole thing. On paper, that's exactly my kind of book. The execution gets quite complicated. I call this a Kitchen Sink book (like the cookie!). There’s a little bit of everything: the slow-burn romance, the theological world-building, the court intrigue, the smut, the mystery, the redemption arc. Each element works individually. Together, they compete for space, and the book never fully settles into what it wants to be. Envy carries the book. His arc is interesting, and I stayed for him. Camilla, the female lead, never quite materialized for me. She's present in most scenes and reactive in most of them, which isn't the same thing as being a full character.
The smut is good. Heyyyyy.
I finished it and I'm glad I did. I won't be continuing the series, which tells you something about how I feel. Worth reading if you're in a specific mood for lush, messy romantasy and you're not expecting tight plotting. Not worth it if you need the pieces to add up.
