Favorite Quote: My magic, which I had been waiting to feel surge through me as a tide, remained dormant. It lurked like a skeleton, hiding beneath my skin, marrow brimming with untapped power.
Story Synopsis: Born to the Underlings, Matilda is the youngest goddess of her clan, blessed with messenger magic. However, her people - gods & goddesses above and below, kill each other frequently, waging silly wars and disrupting the lives of mortals. To manage this world, she must grow up more quickly than a child should. She’s tasked to carry letters and words throughout realms, but when she steals upon a young man’s dreams, she knows Fate has a much bigger plan than humbly taking messages between worlds.
Why does this book beguile? I read Divine Rivals when that was getting a lot of hype, and sadly, that duology was not for me. I was excited to get Wild Reverence as an ARC from the publisher. However, after reading it, I think Rebecca Ross’ style is not right for me. Her prose is unquestionably gorgeous, but I think that overcompensates for the fact that nothing really happens. I don’t really care about the characters and they are too young for me to find believable.
