Story Synopsis: Set in the Grishaverse and following the events of Ruin and Rising, Six of Crows takes us to Ketterdam, and we meet Kaz Brekker. Kaz is a thief, and when he’s asked to pull off the most impossible of heists for a life-changing amount of money, he assembles a crew of misfits and outcasts to get the job done. We meet his main crew, Inej, Jesper, Nina, and Matthias, as they set off on their quest for their quarry (and the money).
After the threat of jurda parem was discovered in Six of Crows, Crooked Kingdom finds our Crows double-crossed, weakened, and still fighting for their lives in the rough streets of Ketterdam. To protect themselves, Ketterdam, and all Grisha, the Crows now find themselves on a job to get their payout, stop the enemy from weaponizing jurda parem, and save the Grisha from a life devoid of free will.
Likes: Other than being set in the same universe as Shadow and Bone, there’s little crossover to the Shadow and Bone series. Bardugo’s writing gets a massive glow-up in this duology compared to the preceding trilogy. The strategy and plot twists are top-notch, and Bardugo does an exquisite job of creating three-dimensional characters that you can relate to, root for, and care about. What seems like minor details in the early part of the story become critical later in the books. I can’t rave enough about this duology.
Rating: 5/5 Stars for both books
