Favorite Quote: “The clearest evidence that justice is the most important of all the virtues comes from what happens when you remove it. It’s remarkably stark: The presence of injustice instantly renders any act of virtue—courage, discipline, wisdom—any skill, any achievement, worthless…or worse.”
Synopsis: The third book in The Stoic Virtues series, Right Thing, Right Now, deals with the virtue of justice. Justice, as Holiday notes in the book, is often thought of as the “justice system” for legal actions. However, justice means much more, which many people today have forgotten. Holiday goes into profound examples with historical figures illustrating moments where someone upheld the virtue of justice because it was the right thing to do. Doing the right thing isn’t always easy or even beneficial to the individual, but upholding justice benefits society in profound ways that have long-term ripple effects.
Why does this book beguile? Right Thing, Right Now is an incredibly timely book for our society. As the world becomes increasingly individualistic, people forget to uphold basic tenets that have served humans well for centuries. No matter your station in life, the amount of money you earn, or your beliefs, there are ways to treat others and things to do that are simply the right thing to do. Holiday’s book, Right Thing, Right Now does a great job illustrating these small decisions and moments and how they have a broader effect on the world.
