Story Synopsis: Kinch is a member of the Thieves Guild. When an attack on a solo traveler, Galva, goes wrong, he’s tasked to accompany (or follow) her to the far northwest corner of the world, Oustrim. First, they seek out a witch, Norrigal, who joins their party. Along the way, Kinch, Galva, and Norrigal get into scrapes and get themselves out of trouble.
Comments: I had high hopes for this book, but it was all over the place. I could not figure out what was happening throughout and I almost DNF’d this book multiple times. Here’s the thing: the premise is good. There’s action, shenanigans, cheeky characters, and all the right elements, but something is missing. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but the whole thing is slightly off. The story opens in a way that reminds me of Thor: Ragnorak, where Thor says, “You’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation….” Unfortunately, the entire book is written in the first person and directed at the reader. I didn’t get attached to any of the characters (except for Bully Boy the Cat).
All that said, I’d give this book another chance in Audiobook format. Additionally, if this story were to be made into a movie or TV show, I’d watch it. It’s a good story and the bones are there, but the written format is probably its weakest.
