The Knight and the Moth
Read this if you… like high fantasy with a unique religion/belief system and the writings of Hannah Whitten or Samantha Shannon.
Why does this beguile? The Knight and the Moth is getting a lot of hype as a breakout fantasy series. I liked this book, but I didn’t love it. The ending was frustrating because it was a cliffhanger rather than resolving anything and continuing the world in the follow up book. The world-building was fantastic, but I felt the romantic tension was resolved far too early. Only out of sheer curiosity will I read the second book in the series to see how the plot is moved forward without that tension.
What it's about: Every ten years, a group of six girls (barely women) who have been cast out of society are brought into the Abbess, a woman who trains them to become Diviners. Diviners must interpret the six Omens shown to them in their vision for paying customers to learn what their futures hold. But in order to See, each Diviner must suffer a drowning and reviving every time they are meant to perform the rite. When Sybil’s fellow Diviners begin disappearing one by one, Sybil sets off with a band of King’s Knights to learn the fates of her friends, and prevent her own unknown fate.
