Favorite Quote: Heck, I’ve lost my temper a few times. Also, I can be a bit too blunt, and excuse it by saying I’m just an honest person, but if I’m truly being honest, sometimes blunt is just mean. Honesty can be an excuse for bullying.

Story Synopsis: Kiela escaped the capital when revolutionaries overthrew the emperor. The library where she lived and worked was ransacked and she and her magical spiderplant, Caz, had to escape quickly, only able to save a few crates of books they’d been stockpiling. Kiela never believed the library would go up in flames. After a last-minute decision to sail to her home island of Caltrey, Kiela finds her family’s former home abandoned but serviceable. Keeping to herself, Kiela finds a way to feed herself, and with the help of a friendly neighbor, open up a jam shop - which also happens to sell spellwork to help the town.

When an imperial investigator tracks Kiela down, she must decide who to trust and where she should call home.

Why does this book beguile? I PUT OFF READING THIS BOOK FOR TOO LONG! The Spellshop is one of the cutest, coziest fantasies I’ve read in a long time. It’s got everything: merhorses, cats with wings, centaurs, merpeople, talking plants, sentient cacti, a bakery, and books.

I’ll be honest: When I started the book, I thought it was going to be pretty cheesy (jumped in too quickly to merhorses), but after about the third chapter, I was all-in with Kiela and Caz. I can’t wait to read the next book!
