Favorite Quote: Validation: communication that one is mindful, understands, and empathizes with another person’s experience, thereby accepting it as valid. Put simply, validation shows that you’re there, you get it, and you care.
Synopsis: People spend a lot of their time trying to get other people to listen, and it doesn’t always work. Validation improves communication and opens the door for more authentic, meaningful, and helpful discussions. Throughout the book, readers learn why validation works, what validation looks like, and how to apply validation with kids, partners, coworkers, and yourself.
Why does this book beguile? I thoroughly enjoyed Validation by Caroline Fleck. As someone who actively tries to get people to do things (at work, and to get you to read books), learning tools to validate others is critically important to help understand why people do and say what they do. The model Fleck outlines (ACCEPTED) helps readers “climb the validation ladder” by practicing different skills to slowly open doors and build trust with others. I love this model because Fleck does not shy away from time and patience. Validation does not come from one interaction or conversation. Validation comes from a thoughtful and active process of questions, understanding, empathy, and trust.
