Favorite Quote: Stop thinking in terms of individual action. What most causes need instead are acts of individual leadership that inspire collective action.
Synopsis: If you’ve ever wanted to build a movement or more actively support causes, Amplify is for you. Using his unique background as a musician for a popular alt-pop group (AJR), Met explores ways musicians and other non-traditional leaders help lead activism and important causes. Taking successes and failures into account, Met delivers a blueprint of how to build a fan base and the importance of connection for your endeavor.
Why does this book beguile? Leading up to 2024, I had heard of AJR and liked a couple of their songs. Then, serendipitously, we attended one of their shows in Salt Lake City in the summer of 2024 where I felt completely blown away by the band. Learning the band’s bassist, Adam, held a PhD and cofounded a climate change nonprofit impressed me even more. Amplify is a helpful book for anyone looking to connect with others around shared causes. Whether it’s sharing your new favorite band, removing single-use plastics from your school, or advocating for better gun legislation, Amplify will help you figure out how to do these things, find the right people to help, and encourage you to adapt to whatever the cause throws your way.
