Favorite Quote: Because the world had decided that to be soft was to be weak, even though in Joan’s experience being soft and flexible was always more durable than being hard and brittle. Admitting you were afraid always took more guts than pretending you weren’t. Being willing to make a mistake got you further than never trying. The world had decided that to be fallible was weak. But we are all fallible. The strong ones are the ones who accept it.

Story Synopsis: Joan is one of the first female astronauts with NASA and has been obsessed with stars and space since childhood. While she typically gets along with everyone, one woman in her cohort, Vanessa, is as enigmatic as she is adept at flying planes and fixing engines. As Joan and Vanessa develop a deep relationship, Joan learns things about herself she never considered and must navigate a new reality, especially when a catastrophic event threatens to change everything.

Why does this book beguile? I read (or rather, attempted to read) another TJR book and had to DNF it (too predictable). Atmosphere, however, was fun, sweet, exciting, and cozy. Joan is lovely and it’s heartwarming to read about good things happening to good people. Atmosphere is full of love, hope, and overcoming challenges.
