Story Synopsis: Silla, after joining up with the Bloodaxe Crew, is now in hiding with her former nemesis, Reynir Galtung. Holed up in a safe-house with Galtung, Silla’s only option is to embrace her bloodline magic, learn to wield it, and step into her true identity.

Saga, Silla’s sister, has been kept as a pet of King Ivan and Queen Signe, unable to leave the castle and constantly affected by panic attacks. When a contingent from another country comes visiting, one the dignitaries uncovers many of Saga’s secrets and forms a plan of his own.

As Silla and Saga figure out their path, an ancient magic awakens in the land, demanding a unification not seen in generations.

Why does this book beguile? The second book in the Ashen series snuck up on me. I read the first book and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unfortunately, Kingdom of Claw had a lot of setup - a lot of stepping stones. It felt slow, like the middle episodes of a TV series leading to something big. It was a slog; however, I can see it very well in my mind (and it would make an excellent screen adaptation!).
