The Mirror Visitor Series by Christelle Dabos

I initially received the first of the Mirror Visitor series as my March Page 1 book subscription. After I read the first one, I immediately bought the other three books in the series - and it’s a wild ride.

Favorite Quote: Ophelia didn’t know which prospect was the more terrifying. A world governed by God, or a world governed by men who think they’re God.

Story Synopsis: This series takes us into a future where Earth ruptured into approximately 20 pieces called Arks. Each of these Arks is ruled by a family spirit, and each spirit has handed down gifts to their descendants. The series follows Ophelia, who lives on Anima. Ophelia has two gifts: object reading, where she can feel the emotions of all the owners of an object throughout the object’s life, and mirror-visiting, where she can travel short distances through mirrors. While Ophelia is going about her regular routine, her life is turned upside down when she finds out she’s been betrothed to a man named Thorn on the northernmost Ark.

After arriving at The Pole and meeting Thorn, Ophelia is thrust into politics, court life, illusion, and manipulation, and she must constantly fight for her life. While dealing with her new reality, she discovers unseen parties manipulate the family's spirits. She ends up traveling to other Arks, seeking a way of ending the shadowy tyranny of the gods.

Why does this book beguile? The Mirror Visitor series was unlike anything I’ve read. I enjoyed it immensely. One thing to note: the series was initially written in French and then translated into English. I feel that the translation is a bit wordier than a native-English speaker would write. I found some passages clunky, but it’s an enjoyable series overall.
