Story Synopsis: After Chaol is left with an injury requiring the use of a wheelchair, he and Nesryn (the new Captain of the Guard in Adarlan) set sail for Antica, the home of the Torre Cesme and the world’s greatest healers. Chaol and Nesryn are granted a stay at the Great Khagan’s palace and Yrene Towers is assigned to heal Chaol as her final test before graduating from the Torre. While in the palace, Chaol and Nesryn begin to suspect Erawan’s dark forces have made it to the Southern Continent. As Chaol heals his body with Yrene’s help, they discover long-forgotten knowledge that could turn the tide of the war brewing in the North.

Meanwhile, Nesryn discovers that Erawan’s dark forces are not the only darkness they may need to contend with in the coming days. As they seek information separately and come together again, Chaol and Nesryn must play courtly games, uncover information from the bowels of the city, and go to the most deserted places on the continent to uncover a secret left from thousands of years ago.

Why does this book beguile? After not having Chaol in Empire of Storms at all, switching gears to Tower of Dawn where the entire story is Chaol, Nesryn, and Yrene, was a bit of mental switching. Empire of Storms ends on such a massive cliffhanger that this book feels like something you need to get out of the way. Don’t get me wrong - there’s a TON of critically important information we learn in Tower of Dawn; however, you learn it in the last 200 pages. There’s so much world-building and scene-setting to get to that last 200 pages that it feels like you’re skimming the first 400-ish pages of the book to “get to the good stuff.”
