Favorite Quote: Our brain’s performance is being gravely manipulated, resulting in behaviors that leave us more lonely, anxious, depressed, distrustful, illness-prone, and overweight than ever before. At the same time, we feel disconnected from ourselves, from others, and from the world at large.

Synopsis: Today’s modern (re: Western) culture is subtly rewiring our brains to disconnect each person from one another. Through food and through digital/virtual interactions, our brains are changing us to behave in ways that serve corporate entity interests rather than improve our lives. The authors (father/son duo), draw on anthropological experience and their own direct medical experience to illustrate the ways sugar, social media, and urban dwelling are actively hurting our mental and physical health and aiding disconnection.

Why does this book beguile? Brain Wash is one of those books everyone should read, sooner rather than later. The authors draw on many well-reviewed studies to illustrate the importance of eating well, spending time in nature, exercising, and connecting with people in real life (sorry, but online doesn’t actually help despite social media’s claims). Brain Wash confirms what so many people suspect about our present world: people are products to serve corporate interests. Companies do not have the individual’s best interest at heart. Unfortunately, until you know this information, there’s very little you can do about it. As you learn, you can make better choices.
