Favorite Quote: Ever since the Cognitive Revolution, Sapiens have thus been living in a dual reality. On the one hand, the objective reality of rivers, trees and lions; and on the other hand, the imagined reality of gods, nations and corporations. As time went by, the imagined reality became ever more powerful, so that today the very survival of rivers, trees and lions depends on the grace of imagined entities such as the United States and Google.
Synopsis: Harari makes history interesting and clear, and he addresses the complexities, contradictions, and hypocrisies societies and cultures worldwide created, dismantled, and rebuilt. This is the book I didn’t know I needed. Sapiens discusses the crazy, weird, horrifying, and brilliant things we have done as a species without judgment. There’s no bias I detected or agenda lurking in the pages… unless you find facts and science polarizing.
Thoughts & Feelings: Sapiens is an incredible book, and I cannot sing its praises enough. Harari takes a logical, rational approach to our biological history and weaves in the many other aspects of humankind, like subjugation, the Industrial Revolution, and the Cognitive Revolution.
Sapiens is a slower read, perfect for a quiet day when you feel alert but not physically productive. Get this book and read (or listen) for an excellent way to learn about who we are as a biological species.
